Street Cast Update for 2009
What happened to the Street Cast?
As we reported last year, it appears Peter Carroll was too good for Ohio Labor Laws last year. As we reported, it seems the street cast and others were paid below minimum wage per Ohio law. Not per federal law which provides for below minimum wage for seasonal employment, but per Ohio law.
Interestingly enough, if you check the employment page at the Ohio Renaissance Festival web site something has changed since last year. There is no mention of street cast on the employment page. Who knows, maybe Slick Pete has decided to do away with Street Cast rather than paying them a fair wage in accordance with Ohio labor laws.
What ever is going on, it is yet another change brought about by yours truly. Power to the peasants.

Cast is being paid $15.00 a day this year. They get a dollar a day raise for each year and can get a tiny bonus at the end of the year if they don’t miss a day. They are still getting peter pounds and they still have to do rehearsal days for free as part of their contract. We feel so sorry for them that we have started taking their peter pounds for product. We give them to our kids to buy food. That way the festival doesn’t get our cash.
Ohio law does mandate minimum wage, even for seasonal help. But, it is cheaper to choke up the back pay and fines when someone complains than it is to pay everyone minimum wage. Especially when most of the cast are teenagers who just want to camp and party over the weekend. Even if they want to write to the state to get back wages, they don’t because they like the party atmosphere Saturday night.
Don’t get me started on the Boy Scout scam.

Qvtvnurp33, are you street cast? If you are right, it is kind of interesting that they addressed the minimum wage issue I brought up by removing Peter Pounds (I think they were illegal) but have not done the right thing and started paying at least minimum wage.
$15.00 a day with or without Peter Pounds is an insult. 30 days mandatory training without any pay is insulting.
This is NOT a 501 c 3 organization. It is a multi million dollar incorporation which profits from street cast so it should pay them a fair wage.
