If you are an American, you are under attack.

We feel that if you attend the Ohio Renaissance Festival, you are casting vote against the United States of America. What’s that? Have I gone mad like Glen Beck? Isn’t that claiming a wee bit over the top? I do not think so and I have the right to not think so. Or at least I thought I did. You see I think I live in the United States of America. Evidently Peter Carroll and his lawyer David Greer think otherwise or at a very minimum they think the Constitution is something to be ignored as long as they can continue to unjustly line the pockets of the rich via lawless conduct. Just make sure nobody ever talks about that lawless conduct.

Peace offering due to Terminal Illness

It has come to our attention that there is a rumor floating around that Peter Carroll, owner of the Ohio Renaissance Festival, has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Although we have for years longed for our day in court, a chance to make the grievances of this protest a proven matter of public record, a chance to cause the authorities to take note of the many violations of law we believe are taking place, we have also planned to suspend this protest should there be a change in management. The idea being that new management should have an opportunity to right what has been made wrong before the protest resumed.

Considering how ill most of us feel about lawyers, you can imagine how twisted a lawyer must be to get thrown out of his or her own club (the bar association). Seriously, think about that for just a moment. What would a thief have to do to get thrown out of a guild of thieves? Did this happen to Peter Carroll? Was he thrown out of the Georgia Bar Association? At this time, we simply do not know. However, while we wait for confirmation from the Georgia Bar Association we gave a wee bit of thought to the idea.

Although the intent of this protest has always been to cause the Ohio Renaissance Festival to address our many issues and become a respectable member of the business community, it seems its owner Peter Carroll is not going to allow that to take place. Instead, he seems to be a mad man running full steam into a blazing fire and dragging the Ohio Renaissance Festival along for the ride. We really did not think he could be that foolish. We really thought he would listen to reason, to address the many issues made public by this protest, and fix those things which are clearly wrong with the Ohio Renaissance Festival. Instead, he seems to have chosen a path of destruction and seeks to blame that self destruction on this protest.

The Kentucky Renaissance Festival starts in about a week. I have to tell you my ass is dragging. Why? Because I just spent hours helping to grade landscape to make sure it is in compliance with the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In all honesty, it wasn’t all that much work but I am old and tired and broken down; so it sure seemed like it. Now I would have been glad to do it for free because I feel rather strongly about the ADA and I know the festival is understaffed for as quickly as it has grown. But the truth is I was paid a few years ago and I would like to share the details of that payment to encourage you to attend the Kentucky Highlander Renaissance Festival.

Harveysburg becomes Petersburg

Yes, it seems as if the village of Harveysburg, OH is relocating itself to Peter World. First the police department which is now located on property owned by one of Peter Carroll’s incorporations, then the government offices of Harveysburg, OH, and then the post office are all thought to be moving to what we are now calling Petersburg.

I was a merchant at the Ohio Renaissance Festival who asked for reasonable accommodation under the American’s with Disabilities Act. During a bad slip in the showers provided by ORF Inc. I reached for a missing grab rail and impaled myself on a rusty nail used to hold towels. I did not sue; I did not threaten to sue. All I did was ask for reasonable accommodation under a Federal Act. This was in keeping with my general way of addressing the injury, which caused my disability, to ask only for those things necessary to keep working.

7 Weekends in 2010 - Rent and ticket increase by 12.5%

It’s official. Now that the merchant fees have been collected from folk expecting 8 weekends, now that season passes have been sold to people expecting 8 weekends, the Ohio Renaissance Festival has announced that the 2010 season will have only 7 weekends. If I am doing the math right, they effectively raised rent to the merchants and ticket prices to the season ticket holders by 12.5% without bothering to mention it.

The other day, I was sitting in the den / office of a fairly well known and controversial author / attorney by the name of Edwin Kagin. Edwin was showing me his extensive collection of knives and swords. One sword he’d purchased from me without a scabbard / sheath years earlier at the Ohio Renaissance Festival. It had a spanking new sheath on it. Edwin Kagin explained that he had Gil Hibben make the sheath. As Gil Hibben is one of the most famous knife makers in the world, I was flattered.

Apparently Peter Carroll and the Ohio Renaissance Festival sued a small ministry and reverend for an amount in excess of $25,000.00 in damages because the ministry dared to consider using the word “renaissance” to promote a fundraiser. After reading the public records on this, my Catholic mother said there is a special place in hell for men like Peter Carroll. My wife read the public records and declared “that man is a piece of work”. I just say Peter Carroll is an Asshole. I think that as you read more, you too will think Peter Carroll is an Asshole and the Ohio Renaissance Festival should be boycotted.

I spent the last hour watching in amazement as a tiny little peep pecked its way out of her shell and then collapsed in exhaustion. Next to her broken shell another peep has just managed a small hole to start her escape. I am worried that she’s been at it for too long without much progress. I’ve never tried to help one out and have read it usually does more damage than good. So I will be spending today on many other activities, but always with that thought in the back of my mind; at what point do you try to help the little thing? What if I choose too late and cause its death? What if I choose too early and cause its death? These aren’t my first new born chickens, I’ve just never had one stall for so long after the first pecks of freedom.

Peter Carroll admits Chemicals were dumped at Ohio Renaissance Festival

Peter Carroll ADMITS someone on the grounds of the Ohio Renaissance Festival “…dumped chemicals in a drainage ditch…” and presented this information to the courts of Warren County via his lawyer David C. Greer. You might recall I am the person who questioned ORF management after Marietta Marcin falsely accused me of dumping those chemicals and then later contacted the EPA after ORF management did not respond to my concerns. Per Dan Roth, ORF Management staff, Marietta Marcin was later fired. I had assumed ORF Inc. had thought that like so many other things said by Marietta Marcin, the story of the chemical dumping was another lie. Per Dan Roth, the woman was fired and the EPA wrote back to me to assure me other reports had not been filed. I’d have to imagine an ethical incorporation who knew of ground and surface water contamination would duly report it, but it seems I am the only one who took that action.

Nearly a year ago I wrote to the General Manager of the Ohio Renaissance Festival stating that I wanted access to employees and other participants for the purpose of forming a union. She did not reply. Since then, it has been one of my ongoing goals. I’ve hoped that enough people would be willing to stand up and be counted that management would have to respect workers rights. Unfortunately, management at the Ohio Renaissance Festival Inc. responded by threatening participants against working with me. Dan Roth is even reported to have refused to issue the 2009 leases until particular merchants just about rebuked me and my efforts to bring a united front to management.

Craft show or Overpriced Fleamarket

ORF Inc. slips further into the dark at the hands of Dan Roth (the Craft Director). At least I think he is one of the managers that escaped the recent shake up. No they aren’t slipping into the Dark Ages, but simply into the dark. One wonders how much further the place can slide into obscurity before it is considered yet another flea market. You see the great strength that Renaissance Festivals have against other theme parks are quality merchants. You are sure to see the “made in China” tag at other theme parks and it litters most flea markets, but Renaissance Festivals offer a different type of shopping. Or at least in theory, they offer hand made goods by craftspeople whose art form existed at the time in which the festival is set. Note, I said in theory. Here is a question for you. If the General Manager of an event has to lie about the event to the press, how good could it be and just what are they hiding. We think she is trying to spin the place to cover up all the problems they are now having. Between loosing their entertainment manager, tearing down a stage, and merchants just about running away from the place; I guess they have to do something to assure (uh, lie) about what is going on or nobody will attend.

Ohio Renaissance Festival Discount Tickets at Kroger

Kroger Co. is an official sponsor of the Ohio Renaissance Festival Inc. Discount coupons for the festival are available at many of their grocery stores. A quick conversation with Kroger’s employees yields information that Kroger Inc. is a union shop. Kroger Co. employees are members of the UFCW union. Why then would it sponsor the Ohio Renaissance Festival, which pays not only below union wages but also below minimum wages? A few of these employees were so outraged by the news that they pledged to speak to their Union Representative in an effort to help employees of the Ohio Renaissance Festival. Why then would Kroger Co. knowingly put their name on an event, which seems to be in such clear violation of their union policies (not to mention law and decency)?

Property Tax Fraud ?

Are the rich exempt from Property Tax?

If you have participated or attended the Ohio Renaissance Festival for any number of years, chances are you’ve noticed new buildings and improvements just about every year. In most situations, these new buildings and improvements to the property would be recorded with the County Auditor for the purpose of assessing property tax amounts. That property tax would be collected and used to fund the local schools.

2009 Preseason Thoughts

I think I have rather clearly demonstrated that Peter Carroll unjustly deprived me of my property and good reputation. It has become rather clear that each and every allegation made by Marietta Marcin was false. Dan Roth, who replaced her at the event, indicated rather clearly that she was fired as a result of my making these matters clear. And yet, I remain without an apology and without proper compensation.

Last year we congratulated Cheryl (Bales) Bucholtz on her apparent promotion to General Manager. Well, it looks like maybe the job wasn’t all it was cut up to be. According to one of those mini-resume type sites, Cheryl is interested in receiving “job inquiries”. Maybe she is just leaving a door open, hoping a door opens, or looking for an exit.

Street Cast Update for 2009

As we reported last year, it appears Peter Carroll was too good for Ohio Labor Laws last year. As we reported, it seems the street cast and others were paid below minimum wage per Ohio law. Not per federal law which provides for below minimum wage for seasonal employment, but per Ohio law.

You might recall we pointed out how illegal it is not to pay minimum wage to employees. Maybe this document existed previously and I didn’t catch it. I can’t really be sure. Slick Pete’s Law Firm

I sometimes wonder about the people Peter Carroll hires. As an example; the food services people who can’t seem to keep track of food services law. Now I have another example, his law firm. Anyone who works at the Ohio Renaissance Festival knows Peter Carroll has a major issue against adult content and especially nudity. I remember a few years ago, when a woman took her shirt off after hours while dancing at a drum circle. Despite being completely legal, Peter Carroll sent police looking for her the next weekend. Of course we all lied about who she was.

Like the pretzels which have to be covered now having coverings, the electrical outlets which were replaced, the now slip shower mats which had to be installed, and even Marietta getting fired; you heard it here first folk. Even before it happened.

Code violations by the numbers

I tried and tried to settle this quietly but Peter Carroll did not care about thing like ADA violations until I made them public. Then ORF Inc. raced to comply. So I gave up, evidently they only listen when the information is made public. So here goes, I think the place is a fire trap and should be shut down for the good of the public. I wanted this kept quiet so they could fix things, but they do not care to listen.

First weekend review

Ann Frank was wrong.

Well, the first weekend of the Ohio Renaissance Festival’s 2008 season has come to an end and I have decided Ann Frank was wrong. Author of the very well known Diary of Ann Frank, she stated firmly that beneath it all people are good. I don’t think Slick Pete is good even deep down. I think he is an uncaring bastard who really does like to hurt people deep down. I think it makes him feel like a man. I draw this conclusion due to the way he has treated people in the past and what is going on now that he met someone who will not tolerate his conduct. Lets examine what has changed since this protest began especially those things different after the first weekend has closed.

Food Service Manager to be fired?

Has anyone noticed the pretzels being sold off a pole are now covered by a paper sleeve? Yep, you heard it here first. Food has to be covered prior to sale. In the case of the pretzels walking around the park on the end of a long pole, this is to prevent bugs from landing on them and birds from pooping on them. They were not covered previously, this year they are in paper sleeves, why do you think that is? Because this protest is working and one by one the Ohio Renaissance Festival is making the changes that are demanded. One issue at a time, they are admitting that they were WRONG. (more…)

Now here is something I never expected. Evidently this protest was discussed in one of the Waynesville churches this morning. As a result, I am now receiving emails telling me I should join the other protest site: http://orfprotest.com and that the url of this web site is obscene. I do apologize to anyone who I have offended with this url and want to know I am involved in that protest site as well and try to remain as civil as possible.I very much appreciate many of the statements being made in the forum system there and hope to find the time to answer much of what is being discussed by your members. You are right, what the Ohio Renaissance Festival and Peter Carroll are doing is not Christian. Of this sort of conduct is not advised by most other religions because is evil and Christianity does not have a patent or copyright on evil (or good for that matter).

New Protest URL

Surprise!It is now about midnight on the night prior to ORF opening it’s 19 season. I have a secret to share. This web site was created as a distraction in case Peter Carroll and / or the Ohio Renaissance Festival tried some slick court trick to file an injunction against the site. I wanted to make absolutely sure he and his lawyers had a target to go after so they wouldn’t notice the protest site intended for mass consumption. Anyone with a lick of protest sense knows that the press and government agencies are less likely to take serious the claims of a URL with profanity in its title.

If you are neither black nor female, would you do business with an incorporation that would discriminate in this way? According to one commenter, that seems to be exactly what the Ohio Renaissance Festival did.

First, I would like to say that with the housing market what it is I can not imagine anyone making much money that way. That said, I also can’t imagine ORF Inc. making much money with the antics they seem to be pulling. So I am kind of undecided and would just like to share what facts and speculations I have been able to discover.

Buildings not ADA Compliant ?

If you attend the Ohio Renaissance Festival in Harveysburg, Ohio (just north of Cincinnati, OH), please pay special attention to the stairs and other obstacles that folk in wheel chairs must combat while visiting the festival. I think you will find that many of the buildings do not offer any form of wheel chair ramps. Other buildings have very steep ramps or ramps which are very slick when it rains. I do not believe this is compliant with ADA standards.

Real Estate Tax not Paid?

Are real-estate taxes being paid properly by ORF Inc. and Peter Carroll?

Before I get started on this issue, lets be perfectly clear about something. We are not talking about shacks or tents. Some of the buildings at the Ohio Renaissance festival have concrete floors, underground wiring, hot and cold running water, showers, and even bath tubs. Some of them have living quarters which the festival have approved. Basically, these are small cottages which sell for about $10,000.00 to $20,000.00 a peace. I have heard tell of one being offered last year for $27,000.00 but I do not know that it sold. So lets dispense with the common defense that these are temporary structures or that the village is not a permanent structure because it is only open for two months.

This just in. It seems Peter Carroll not only wants to deny equal access for the disabled, he doesn’t seem to want him in his fair. Per contact and conversation with an employee of Silver, Stone, and Sword; the owner of this shop at the Ohio Renaissance Festival and his wife are good people. Having known Vick (the owner) for many years, I have observed that although we have been business competitors (still are elsewhere) he has always had a kind word for me. His wife is great with our kids and both hers and our daughter’s eyes light up when they see each other. So imagine my surprise when I heard that Vick fired someone for having an epileptic seizure. So surprised that I looked it into a wee bit more.

File an ADA Complaint

The United States of America has community values and laws which rather clearly state that one of the responsibilities associated with doing business with our citizens is that a business provides equal access to disabled Americans. The specific law is commonly called ADA. Basically, it forces businesses to use some of their profits to make sure their business does not discriminate on the bases of disability.

Buildings too close w/o Firewalls

Buildings seem too close without firewalls.

During the process of purchasing my building from Jim and Marlena Walls, I was informed that the building was in full compliance with fire code. In fact, that building was the basis on which the construction manual for the Ohio Renaissance Festival was created. Jim Walls, one of the former Craft Directors, had been with the Ohio Renaissance Festival for years. He informed me that back in the day, the local municipality insisted on building code being met. For that reason, my building was equipped with a proper firewall, hardwired smoke detectors in every room, a circuit breaker box, proper underground wiring, an occupancy permit, and records of inspection.

Other Fairs n Forums

Have you ever wondered why the Ohio Renaissance Festival does not have a forum system on their web site? Per a conversation with Cheryl Bales, the VP/Marketing Director of ORF, Peter Carroll hates the internet. From first hand knowledge, he seems to hate it when people exchange information between themselves. In a calm business meeting, when I made a factual statement he screamed something about being sick of “renie rumor”. Well, there is a difference between rumors and discussions.
